On the plane from JFK to Heathrow, I spoke with six women, Americans, mostly from the Midwest, mostly middle-aged, all white, who told me the same story: the love between Kate and William was “the real thing.” As one woman put it:

You could tell by the way he looked at her, not at all like his father, Prince Charles, who never really did love his mother. After all, he was calling his mistress, Camilla, on the way to his wedding with Diana. Of course Charles loves Camilla. Why would he have married her if he didn’t? She’s not young anymore. Not much to look at. It must be a real love between them. It’s romantic in its own way. But William, he’s going to do it right. Marry the woman he loves the first time.

All six women agreed with the basic story of love, which was articulated by one of them as follows:
